This 11-day China travel adventure starts in Beijing, the centre of Chinese politics and culture, before taking you to the ancient heart of the country at Xi’an, then through the beautiful south to ever-changing Hong Kong.

Immerse yourself in the imperial splendour of old China as you spend a day exploring Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Built in the 15th century, the Forbidden City is a massive complex that rewards a day of exploration with a fascinating look at China’s history. Your afternoon is equal parts sightseeing and relaxation at the Temple of Heaven, an important symbol of China, surrounded by beautiful gardens. Spend your next day at the Badaling section of the Great Wall. This is one of the best preserved and most accessible sections of the Wall, sure to impress, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.

Further inland, ancient capital Xi’an is best known today as home to the Terracotta Army, rediscovered only in 1974. Today, the three partially excavated pits are one of China’s most popular attractions and with good reason. An estimated 8,000 soldiers, along with chariots and horses make up the army, and their unearthing is an ongoing process. Xi’an itself is a fascinating city in its own right, particularly as you explore the market in its Muslim quarter.

It’s surprising in some ways that Guilin doesn’t pop up on more China travel itineraries. Still, its relative anonymity is good news for those who do make it to this picturesque city, surrounded by limestone peaks and traditional rice paddies. The main highlight however is the Li River, on which you’ll enjoy a cruise through this amazing landscape.

End your journey with several days at leisure in Hong Kong. A sightseeing tour takes you to some of the less accessible parts of the island on your first day, including Aberdeen Fishing Village and Stanley Market. With your free time, you may want to visit the ‘Big Buddha’ of Lantau Island, find serenity in the gardens of Chi Lin Nunnery, or explore the kitchens of Hong Kong on a local ‘foodie’ tour.
