Although Chinese New Year is the more significant celebration, Christmas is warmly embraced across Hong Kong with dazzling illuminations, elaborate decorations and festive cheer by the Santa sack-load. By mid-November, a slew of seasonal markets selling artisanal gifts, gourmet treats and myriad stocking fillers also crop up throughout the city. In case you’re passing through Hong Kong at the end of the year, here’s a round-up of the city’s Winter and Christmas Markets. Ho, ho ho!
Hong Kong’s original ‘farmer’s market’ promoting sustainability and sustenance returns in November for a four-month stint over the cooler winter months. After opening with a dedicated coffee festival, the precinct at Taikoo Place is transformed into a winter wonderland for its ‘Snowy Christmas’ when more than 40 stall holders repping local makers, farmers and producers draw gourmands and families with their holiday bounty.
- 4 Nov, 2018-17 Feb, 2019 (excluding 2 and 23 Dec), 11am-5pm
- Tong Chong St, Taikoo Place
Quite possibly the biggest of the yuletide markets, Stanley Plaza’s Christmas extravaganza attracts thousands of international visitors each year with its intoxicating mix of shopping, food tastings and entertainment. Held in collaboration with the Consulate General of Finland Hong Kong and the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, this year’s bonanza has a traditional northern European spin, complete with a life-size Joulupukki Yule Goat and a wood elves' tree house. Shop for stocking thrillers and colourful decorations from 100+ stalls selling gifts, crafts, food and drinks, while kids are kept distracted by light shows, traditional Finnish music and dance performances, and, a chance to meet the real Santa Claus, natch.
- 8, 9,15 & 16 Dec, 2018 (Sat & Sun), 12pm-8pm
- Stanley Plaza amphitheatre and surrounding area, Stanley
- A free shuttle bus runs between Central and Stanley Plaza on market days
Hong Kong’s Christmas might typically veer more balmy than white, but this buzzing market creates plenty of festive excitement with live entertainment, foodie spoils, an array of workshops and gifting shopportunity. Better still, all proceeds and donations go straight to Operation Santa Claus, an annual fundraiser that supports local and regional non-profit organisations.
- 23-25 Nov, Starstreet Precinct, Wan Chai and 29 Nov-1 Dec, Taikoo Place
Local crafting champs, Handmade in Hong Kong, host regular Sunday markets at family enclave Discovery Bay, and come mid-November they take on a joyful Christmassy vibe. If you’re on the hunt for toys and gifts that are original, handcrafted and sustainable, this is your honeypot. Beeline to DB’s Main Plaza and Tai Pak Beach to browse among hundreds of stalls selling locally made artisanal goods spanning jewellery and leatherware, toys, soft furnishings, and edible/drinkable goodies. Kicking off the season on 3rd Nov is ‘The Big Picnic’, when the market turns music festival with live performances, beach bar and an array of dining experiences running alongside the craftwork on display. Shop to it
- 3, 11 & 25 Nov & 9 Dec, 2018
